We're redoing our front yard and want to put in a lawn substitute...I'm looking at a thyme because it will put up with full sun and doesn't need a lot of water once established. Also, you can plant it via seed vs. buying plugs which has to be less expensive.

Has anybody used any sort of lawn substitute? Do you like it? Are there any things I need to know about it before giving it a try? Any plant suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

I like thyme alot, and have used it as a groundcover. but not a whole lawn.

if you want to reduce grass my first choice is always more garden beds. near my house a guy recently covered his front yard in raised square veggie beds. it isn't attractive but you can always put in more attractively designed beds.

I do not like to mow grass, so when it grew too high in sunny areas, I would dig it up and put in a flower bed. Add a few small evergreens, a birdbath and charming paths to make the area beautiful year around.
